I have a roo that is staying in a large dog house until my girls are old enough from his "attention" and he can then move in with them. I was using pine shavings as bedding for him and the girls but I just today switched to straw. He does not like straw!!!! He won't got into his house!!!! I was just outside taking all the straw out of his house and tried putting him in it three times and he fights me and runs back out. He has it in his mind that he's going to sleep standing on top of the dog house.

Is it ok for him to sleep out in the open? I have a secure chicken yard but I'm still scared.

Who would have though he would be so very particular!

anyway, he may be safe, it depends on your run situation. I would think though, whether he is safe or not, that you will sleep easier if he is on. Can you feed him in there or something or even change back to the pine?

Either way, good luck with him.

I went out again at dark. He was passed out asleep on top of the dog house. I picked him up and put him in his house and started walk away and I hear "flap flap flap" I turn around and shine the flashlight on the house....he's back in the roof. STUPID ROO!!!!! I go back and point my finger in his face, "STAY IN YOUR HOUSE DUMB HEAD!!!!" I said it in a sweet way though. I pick him up and start to walk out...no flap flap flap. He's in his house and he's asleep. FINALLY!!! I win!!!

Ha ha, stubborn roo!! Have you tried putting a perch in the house for him?? Even just a 2x4 on some cinder blocks, even though it's only a few inches of the ground he may use it. He may just not like sleeping on the floor.
sometimes they are just silly...

He has a roost/perch in the dog house. I've had him for 6 weeks and tonight was the first time he wouldn't go in. He was mad when I was putting the straw in. He just doesn't like straw I guess.

He has not wanted to sleep in his house for the past 3 nights. The past 2 nights I have to go out in the complete dark while he's blind and put him in the house. Now it's been raining and his dumb self is standing on top of the house soaking wet!!! Can he catch a cold?

Could it be that maybe...there was a snake in there at one time, and he saw it?? Is the dog house sitting flat on the ground? Maybe you can get a few cinderblock and set the dog house up off the ground? They do like to roost high at night. Im sure if he gets wet, and cold, it would not be good for him. Can you put a door on the doghouse, and maybe shut him in at night?

my girls are outside roosting on the monkey bars - they sleep out there every night.(we made a coop out of an old play house) our rooster used to too but we got rid of him. your roo should be fine, he'll be happier and also if a predator comes your rooster will be sure to fight it. roosters are good at protecting themselves/the flock
