Whew, That was crazy!
Bantam Rooster and a hen are sick inside. Super sick. No balance sick. I am thinking it's a mold or toxoplasmosis or botulism. Their legs don't work. (Could be Mareks, but treating as if it's not) They seem to have nerve problems, not focusing perfectly, intention tremors, falling over. But they seem to be recovering slowly.
Anyway, if I hadn't been in there watching them eat and drink.....
The rooster started throwing himself backward, peddling his feet...I thought at first seizure... or death spasm. My mind raced. He was throwing his head all over....
I looked in his throat. I saw mucus in this mouth, I swept that. I saw there was a tiny piece of cracked corn right on airway (normally open hole for breathing was closed and the corn sitting right there at the edge.
I tried twice to reach it with my fingernail...it had already been 2 or 3 min by now I am sure...
Finally I thought got it, it was gone, but I know, I didn't pull it it out. I thought I pushed it right down into his airway....and still I might have. That I will need a vet for. But I think I actually pushed it past the airway and to the back or side... fingers crossed. He is resting (he lost his appetite for tonight) and breathing normally.
FYI, Next time, I will remember my EMD(human) training and sweep it out with a sideways motion, not try to grab it with my finger nail. Is there heimlich for chickens? I beat him and shook him upside down pretty good, trying to save his life.
Just wanted to post in case someone else has a chance to save a bird.
