Rooster Went Nuts...Brutally Attacked Hen (MORE PHOTOS ADDED)

Omgosh...any roo who'd done something like that to one of my girls wouldn't have had the benefit of being put down at the vet. I rehomed a roo who bloodied one of my girl's combs because she wouldn't submit (he was just generally too rough with them all). I would have probably gone berserk if I'd seen something like that.

Other than making it through the shock, your hen will heal as long as you keep the area clean and medicated (and away from others). Poor thing.

Well, she seems pretty active (or did till we just turned down the lights in the room she's in). She ate a bunch of corn and drank a bunch...and she's pooping again. For a bird that's been scalped, its amazing how "normal" she's acting .

Trust me, I was all ready to do it with my hatchet. I had put on coveralls, gloves, chased him down (he tried to hide in the coop) and was walking him down the hill to my wood pile/chopping block (I have 4+ acres so its a decent walk) but my SO couldn't bear for me to do it and have him screaming so he made me take him to the Vet. Any rooster that does that to a hen gets an automatic death sentence.

Oh your poor girl. This happened to one if my cockerels a few months back. The one mistake I made was using blukote. Hubby is a vet but was out of town at the time. Blukote sort of seals the wound so the skin can't grow back. So upon returning, hubby really cleaned out the wound and cut off any edges of the skin that had scanned or died. This promoted new growth. Don't ask me details because I had my eyes closed while holding Willoughby

We cleaned twice a day and did the neosporin (regular, not pain relief) thing. We probably had Willoughby inside for a month. Towards the end, when the hole had mostly closed up, except for a couple millimeters, hubby decided to sighted the wound closed. It definitely sped things up.

Also, give your baby easily digestable, nutritious food, like scrambled eggs.

Good luck!

Your comment brings up a question...is it safe to use the pain killer neosporin on chickens? I haven't yet but if it would help her out with some pain relief, I'd definitely want to do it for her.

I had another hen hurt her leg once (she basically hyperextended it and couldnt put weight on it for a few days) and the Vet gave us some liquid painkiller to give her. If the painkiller neosporin works too, that'd be great.

Your hen may need an oral antibiotic. Baytril is a good one. I get it through my family vet. Give him/her the weight of your hen and explain the situation. Hopefully then can sell you the Baytril.
Since the wound is so close to the brain, any infection could be fatal. Good luck.

p.s. I would not have the rooster on my property. He would be in the freezer. That is unusual and unacceptable behavior for a rooster.

I have heard that you can NOT use the kind with the painkiller in it. It is supposedly very bad for chickens.

Sorry about your girl. I hope she heals quickly.

When I started a thread about Willoughby's injury, there was a consensus AGAINST using the painkiller neosporin.

Good to know...I was leery on it anyway as I wasn't sure if a 6 lb chicken might OD on it or not.
