How'd it go? Praying it was peaceful for you both.

It was very hard and took a lot longer than they said it would. She did an overdose of anesthesia and said it would take 3-5 minutes so I stayed with him but it ended up taking almost 30 minutes and she had to double dose him since the first wasn’t working after 20 minutes. I’m grateful he’s no longer suffering, she said he was getting sores from sitting so much and he had muscle wasting on the bad leg. They sent him home with me in a box and the ground is too frozen to bury him so I don’t know what to do with him and I feel bad about it.

Some people put them in the freezer until summer. I've always chucked them over the ridge on my back property, but that's not a good idea when death was caused chemically.

Hello, I'm a new chicken mom and something similar happened with my only roo. I have a flock of 7 and they are just now 4 months old. My roo broke his hip just above his leg as you described and I immediately separated him from the flock. He was in pain right away and I set up a big dog kennel for him to stay in and try to possibly heal on his own so the girls wouldn't bully him bc he is injured as ive read chickens do with other sick chickens. I felt horrible for him. He's the sweetest thing. I gave him food and water and monitored him closely over the next 48 hours. He ate, drink and continued to use the bathroom so I felt there was hope. That was a month ago. He is now in a bigger kennel, standing up on one leg, hopping around, even putting weight on the leg where he broke his hip. He is also now roosting up high. I've had many people tell me chickens are so resilient, especially being young and will usually heal on their own with alot of love and TLC. I'm thinking another month of separation then I'll introduce him back to the girls. The main thing I was worried about was the pain he may he in but he never showed he was in any. Apparently chickens have a very high pain tolerance. I couldn't bring myself to cull him or give up on him. He stayed laying down for the first couple of weeks...then one day I came out to check on him and he was standing. Fix your baby a comfy place to heal and keep him separated. You will be surprised

Glad your boy seems on the mend. How is he doing now?

My yr old hen has a hip fracture or dislocation - I am leaning towards a fracture were the femur has broke off the ball joint. Only an X-ray would confirm this.

The cost for a radiology consult with the vet is up near $1,000.00 here so that is not an option. I have a medical background (nurse) so I will be trying to see if my gal can heal a ‘false joint’. Thankfully she is a quiet wee girl, eating, drinking, escapes last night and flew hopped up onto the roosting ledge. So she is able to get around.

I’ll let her try healing as long as she stay eating. Thankfully a barn cam shows me she is getting up and about eating and drinking on her own, so I don’t have to disturb her.
