Rooster With Badly Infected Wound! UPDATE: Spice died last night :*(

Can you get him in a warm bath and soak it for a while, then clean up the wound? It looks a lot like the old, dead skin and infection that was present on my hen's nasty wound and we're actually making good progress on healing it up!

he's had two baths since he came in and he DID NOT like them... he didn't flap or scratch, but hung his head limply and started gasping. that's good about your hen, though!

i told my mom he needs to be taken to the vet, but she's still determined that he'll recover fine here. i don't want to have to drain his wound myself...

I understand that you don't want to do it yourself, but you have no means of getting him medical care and obviously his condition is NOT improving on it's own.

Since you can't get him to a vet nor antibiotics, what about flaking open that wound and giving him an epsom salt soak like 3 times a day for 10 minutes? Espsom salts draws out infection.

Here is one article but you can find more. This is more of a feeding solution but you can get warm water, put in about a half cup of the salts and soak his wounds in it. Do it like 3 times a day.

Soak it in epsom salt dissolved in warm water and/or betadine diluted to weak tea color with warm water. If there is an open wound on the foot I'd probably squirt betadine over it and then soak in epsom salt just to be sure. Betadine is one of the best disinfectants for wounds and does not sting while epsom salt helps both disinfect and relieve soreness.​

Pour peroxide over the wound, let it dry (5 minutes or so) and then do it again. Apply neosporin heavily and cover with a non-stick bandage (the shiny 4x4 squares work well). Then completely cover the bandage with plastic wrap and tape it to itself. Leave it on for 1 day. The abcess should rupture and drain (it will stink!

) . Remove the bandage and wash the area well, apply more neosporin and leave unbandaged.

If the wound does not break open the first time, repeat from the beginning. Injected or oral antibiotics would help this clear up much faster. Good luck and keep us posted. I hope it is not too late to save your bird. Keep in mind that culling may be necessary if the infection has spread too much.

thank you for all the advice. i will try your idea first, brattishtaz, and if that doesn't work i will try the epsom salt idea. i'll keep you posted...

Let me know how it goes. A pediatrician taught me this trick when my daughter had an infected toe. I also used it when my BO roo was attacked by a hawk and it worked like a charm.
If you try it twice and it does not work, you could try the epsom salt soak right away while the scabs are still mushy. You just need it to open up and drain.

okay, so i noticed that the swelling has gone down a bit, although he isn't acting any better today. i'll take off the wrap in about an hour. i hope it drains!

okay so it didn't drain. i soaked him in an epsom salt bath and the scab came off. it didn't bleed at all but there is a lot of kind of cheesy pus underneath that seems to be slowly coming out. i put some more hydrogen pyroxide on it and left him under a heatlamp in his cage. when he is dry i will apply more neosporin and wrap up the wound in gauze. he doesn't seem willing to eat or drink and i think he still has a fever. he doesn't look to good
