Do they have grit available?

I would wet some of the pellets to make a mash that is about the consistency of cooked oatmeal.

Mine act like its a great treat plus it gets both food and water in them.

I have seen him eat. I gave them some sunflower seeds as a treat about half an hour ago and he was eating those too.

You really shouldn't feed treats if he isn't doing well.
A complete feed is best.

I haven't given them any grit and I don't think our garden contains much either (mainly grass). That might help break it up so I will get some. I'll create a mash with the feed too

That is good news.
If they fill up on treats they aren't getting a complete diet.
A complete diet goes a long way for their health.

Just listened to him then and he is. The hens are too and they have been for a while
