Our buff orpington roo was doing great but we felt bad for him managing a flock of almost 40 free ranged hens alone. He was running from the coop to the barn to the front pasture to keep an eye on things. So we got another roo and our roo instigated many little fights before we separated them (like hours after them meeting) We were doing good having one roo free range and the other in "bird jail" so everyone could see him but no one could touch him, then we swapped them every other day so they both had free time. Both great roos... kept close watch on the hens, kept the hawks away, always the last in the coop ect. Well one day our rooster escaped bird jail and instigated a fight which he lost. No one died but he was outcasted a little and a few days went by and things seemed back to normal (everyone together, no fighting, the roos just avoided each other) Then one morning it was apparent there was a disagreement between them again so I rehomed the new rooster and kept our original roo. His confidence is shot and he hardly crows and pretty much just stands by the gate waiting for me to come in the pasture. I need him to do his job! Last night when I went to put everyone up there were 5 hens out and he was roosting already!
Can I get him back to feeling like top dog or will he always be this way now?
