Rooster with mass in neck, possible tumor, thymus response -- Marek's

I'm still learning about Marek's, so I can't say for sure. However, I did have one that seemed to go down overnight, but I hadn't really been watching her all that closely, so maybe she had been sick longer than I thought.

FWIW, according to one of my books, birds should get 30ml/kg every 6-8 hours, so you might want to think about giving more fluids. Can you tube feed?

Fluid info is here:

It's from this book set which I bought before I found it online:

Tumor growth often accompanies Marek's, but have read that it is usually intestinal tumors, and yes it will seem sudden when the tumors get large. Not certain at all if this is the problem for Trousers, though. Do you know if the breeder vaccinated? Trousers is such a sweetheart. I sure hope he recovers. You are giving him every chance. Best wishes to you.

Thank you for the advice on the water. He's a big guy so I will up the water considerably.

I don't think that he was vaccinated. I will try to get in touch with the person that hatched him to be sure.

I can tube feed/crop feed if necessary; I will hold off until it's necessary. He just ate about a tablespoon of soft, moist oatmeal mixed with feed, and I was able to get about 10ml of water into him as well.

If it is Marek's, I understand that there is nothing I can do other than make him comfortable and give him hydration and nutrition, and hope for the best? I know there is no way to know the origin; it can be nearly anywhere in the environment, or one of my hens could be a carrier that showed no symptoms? They were all vaccinated as chicks.

OH Jennifer, my heart goes out to you....
I have used a syringe to get water into the birds mouth. Also I have used alot of TLC, rubbing the feet / comb/ wattles/ petting to stimulate them.....can't hurt but could help.....

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Trousers hang in there boy, you have so many peeps praying for you......:hugs :love

I am hoping that this is just a glitch from the anesthesia, and that the flushing it out with fluids will help him. He is such a loved rooster, surely he must appreciate the extra attention right now. I'll continue to send healing wishes for Trousers to rally and soon be pacing to go join Miss Derp and friends outdoors.

I hope he will be ok. Once Marek's gets into your environment, it never leaves. I started a thread a while ago asking questions about Marek's, and got some good answers. If I can find it, I will post the link.

Poor, dear Trousers. Under the circumstances, the symptoms sound like they could be neurological associated with the anesthesia which would seem more likely than Marek's at this point.
I certainly hope it is just temporary. It must be hard to see him unable to stay upright, but at least he shows some interest in food. We are all rooting for your sweet Trousers.
