Rooster with mucus discharge

Our year and a half old rooster has a plugged nostril. He has always had some troubles breathing and lately he has had some clear, bubbly mucus from his beak. He breathes through his beak a lot and occasionally when he’s drinking he has a mouthful of thick water come back up. He does not have a full crop when this happens. We have tried putting VetRX on his beak and acv in the water. Any other suggestions?

Hygiene, then wait and see if it gets plugged again. Scrub both sides and clean the openings with a toothbrush. If you need to scrape off the dried dirt and mucous, use a toothpick. Wash with an eyedropper to get all the dirt and mucous out.

Any new chickens join your flock lately? There are a few possibilities. It could be something viral, or could be bacterial.

Any viral cause can't be treated with an antibiotic, but the virus will go dormant after a little while and he should recover and live possibly without ever showing symptoms again.

As for if the cause is bacterial, tylosin (tylan) can help common bronchial infections. It is an antibiotic.

VetRx I have never used as I live outise the US. Acv is good for if you think he may have a worm infection contibuting to his immune system weakening. If you want to give him medicine for a possible bacterial infection, that would be an antibiotic like Tylan. If you think your flock is at risk of worms, maybe treat that, they can cause a weak immune system. Otherwise you need to just clean his nostrils and beak and see how he does for a while.

That black scab near his nostril looks like it could be an inflammation inside his face. Could be caused by particles in the air or inside the house, or the other bacterial/viral reasons stated above. If it is dust inhalation you'll have to figure out where the cause is.

Drop 1 drop of Hydrogen Peroxide on the debris blocking his nostril, then work on getting that out. You can use an Orange Stick (like used for cuticles) to gently loosen the debris. You may have to work on it in stages. 1 drop HP, get out as much as you can, then another 1 drop HP, dig, etc.

What does the inside of his beak look like (look at the roof of his beak, back of throat, sides, etc.) Any mucous, white or yellow pasty material?

Photos of the cleaned out nostrils and inside of the beak would be great too!

I have a rooster that has yellow thick mucus looking stuff in the roof of his beak and coming out of his nose. Help please?! He’s just roosting today and breathing heavy. Was normal yesterday aside from sneezing…. No crowing this morning either… I know he feels awful.

Can you post photos of the inside of the beak and of your rooster?
Where are you located in the world?

Is there a bad odor?
Is he new to you or have you added any new birds within the last 30 days?

If he's having a hard time breathing and you suspect the mucous inside the beak is part of the problem, then it may be a good idea to have someone help and see if you can gently take a qtip and remove some of the blockage.

Treatment is dependent on the cause of the mucous/material that's inside the beak.

If vet care is an option, that's always best.
