I'm hoping someone will be able to help me figure out whats going on with my year old rooster. There are 10 hens in with him and he does mate with almost everyone of them very frequently. His cloaca is very bright red and swollen as well as the surrounding area. It also looks like a bunch of feathers are broken and missing. I looked for signs of mites or lice but didn't find any. He is eating/drinking normally and behaving fine otherwise. I just happen to notice it today when he bent over to eat something. Any ideas? Tips?

First, the best thing for the irritated tissue is Vetericyn.

Second, you may have the sort of mites that only bother the chickens at night. To be sure, investigate with a flashlight after dark. Take a damp paper towel and wipe the roost. If you get a red smear, you then have confirmed you need to treat the coop for mites.
