Rooster!!!

For breeding purposes a Rhode Island Red (Production Red) seems to be the most useful, as you can breed high production RSL's (over Delawares, for example) and BSL's (over Barred Rocks) with it. They are a handful though, so if I had my pick I'd probably go with a more docile Black Australorp rooster, and just stick with breeding BSL's.

All of my RIR roos have been aggressive. I have heard the same reports from others too. But it isn't impossible to get a good boy.

My Australorp rooster is the best rooster I have ever owned, bought him for $10 at my school and I'm glad I did. He's super friendly to me and my other pets and the breed lays beautiful tasting, large eggs.

My Red Star (red sex link) is a doll... He's good to the girls, and my kids can pick him up... He has good egg laying genes,; I got him to cross with BRs and Anconas... He's beautiful too :)

I did love my australorp. He was large, friendly, and had this beautiful iridescent color.

The friendliest rooster I've ever owned was a great big silver laced Brahma. He was so docile and calm. He protected his ladies and was always gentle with them.
I think pretty much any rooster can be tamed and be nice and gentle, but some breeds may be easier than others. I had a Sussex rooster who was very nice and friendly, but then he one day he turned on me. So he went bye bye.
Whatever you get, good luck!
