Roosters and Hens Question.. Behavior.

One rooster will be able to service your hens for future chicks. matter of fact you could even get a few more for the one roo. Two roos will only cause stress and have your chickens running for their lives when the roos want to meet their needs. I say watch for the most gentleman roo and rehome or chicken pot pie the others. You will have happy hens for this.

It is Done!! We started with 5 now we have 1.. 3 of the roosters went to a home and 1 ended up dinner.. Which I feel will somehow come back as karma to haunt me.. We now have 4 hens and one roo.. Thanks to all for your advice!

Good for you on the rehome....and let me know if you need a recipe for Rooster and Dumplings.....mine were outstanding!

And I was not sure I could handle the ones that went to frezer camp either.....but, it seems I can and anything was better than the fighting. Now everyone at our house are getting along....well except for Lone Rooster. He was banished to the chicken tractor. Started working on his run today, am working on modifying his coop that I picked up for him. Now, Saturday morning am going to the chicken swap and looking for him a couple of girls of his own. The other rooster is happy now and the last two days I was lucky enough to get an egg each day!

My neighbor is eating the one rooster.. We aren't meat eaters in my home.. and the only animal protein we do eat is eggs.. and not of lately.. We are waiting for our hens to start laying.. They are 20-21 weeks old.. fingers crossed it will be soon. Is it true that when the rooster starts mounting they will lay soon?. He isn't to aggressive, he does his wing circle dance and if they aren't compliant he doesn't push the issue. I think before he was just trying to prove his dominance to the other roosters.. Now that he is the only one he his nicer to the ladies.

So on a side note.. I have been dreaming of my chickens laying eggs.. though they have not yet started.. Could this be a sign of laying soon?? I am so anticipating.. I am currently pregnant and I am craving some eggs.. come on already!!!

I have included a pic of our Red (Goldie).. I was taking her picture and she was so curious about the camera she came up to peck it.. lol

Um.. what is the egg song? I have heard a lot of noises coming from my birds.. but the eggs song.. I don't know..

Here is a pic of our Red (Goldie), Buff Orp/Black Polish Mix Hens (Thing 1, and Mini.. Thing 2 is behind Goldies head) and the Mix Roo (Slick).

They are unique and beautiful birds.. and I am very happy to have them.. they were hatched in a Kindergarten class so taming them hasn't been to difficult.. the Rooster is a little sketchy at times..
So what is this song your talking about?

The egg song is a loud bock-bock-baGOCK!!!!! over and over again by the hens, with the roosters sometimes joining.

It's really amusing when I have two or three laying eggs at once in the coop, then EVERYONE gets squawking!

Yes, it sounds like a big emergency alarm of some kind when they all get going at once. It's great fun!

In ancient times when chickens flocks were wandering around deep Indians forests, the laying hen hides in her nest to lay an egg. After 1 or 2 hours when she finishes her job, she realizes that her family is not around any more. Where are they? she can't see them. In one hour walking , they must be far away. What she can do? She squawks very loud the song that means: "HERE I AM< WHERE ARE YOU"?? And the flock, answers her the same manner....They act now the same way, that their ancestors did in those days.
