my rooster is getting very agressive with my other hens. he's showing them "attention" in a mean way. he stalks them, really yanks on their heads, feathers fly, not his normal attentive ways, and yesterday one of my hens actually hid in the bushes and didn't want to roost because he gave her alot of attention and pulled out alot of head feathers on her. will this last or is this just a phase? if anyone has any information please post replies. thank you, -horselover98

UPDATE: ok so he's giving alot of attention to one specific hen and she was locked away from him this morning and we went out and let her out and he went right after her. and it wasn't to give her "attention" it looked like it was to hurt her. Then we locked him away and she's running around happily right now. He's not happy because he's separated from his hens. He was really grabbing her head and comb, really stepping on her, and she was laying down just gonna let him do his thing and he just wouldn't stop. We don't know if he'll have to be removed from the flock or if this is temporary. If anyone has any information on this please help!

Sounds bad...he could badly hurt or kill them. I recently had to give the execution order for a very handsome rooster I had because he was determined to hurt my very favorite pullet, Sunbeam. It was a hard call to make, but I felt relieved afterward.

UPDATE: So, our roo is still locked up and he's doing better and our hens are running around very happily and we got to thinking that maybe he's attacking her because she's been doing something to our other birds and he's mad at her. so i was wondering if any of my fellow BYC people have any idea if he's doing this because he's mad at her and it's her fault or if he wants to give her "attention" and if this is going to last or will it wear out. if anyone has any advice please help!

UPDATE: our birds are 1 year and 3 months old just to let you guys know. also we made the hen go in to the roost and they are all roosting together and seem to be better. maybe it's because they were seperated for a while. and NJbirdlover i looked at your post and that's pretty close to what our roo was doing.

I had a roo that did this to one of my buff orpingtons. He did his rooster thing with all of the hens, but he was especially mean to one of them. He wanted her to be totally submissive to him. When I would toss in treats after they had gone up to the roost, she would be first hen down and he would jump down and tear her butt up! He would jump on her and pull her head and neck feathers, not necesarily mating her. He'd pull so hard that her little scalp would lift off of her skull. Then after he'd get off, he'd dance around her and scratch his feet. She would just lay there with her eyes closed and not twitch a feather. Poor little thing was snatched bald-headed and I couldn't take it anymore. Anytime a hen was friendly with me, they'd get the same treatment. I rehomed him. He was just too too rough for my liking. My roosters will be gentlemen or they won't live here.

I think I am going to have to cull one of my roos for this very reason. The big roo won' t let this guy hang with the flock anymore now that he has grown up and started crowing and other things grown roos do. Now he hangs out by himself and if he happens to catch a girl away from Razzle (the head roo) they are in fo rsome very rough treatment. the sad thing is Sam was very sweet until a couple of weeks ago. I really wanted to have a "back up roo but I hate seeing him pull their feathers out like that.

Thank you guys for all of your help. Chicky tocks, that is Exactly what our roo is doing. Since they are all roosting together, we are hoping he'll be better by tomorrow. We were very happy that after being put away and we let him out and he did not attack her. And he hasn't since this morning. We hope we'll be able to break him from this habit. If anyone still does have anyone advice we would still gladly appreciate it. Thank you again, -horselover98 also the rooster and hen are buttercups.
