Roosters comb turning black

It's summer and other than maybe getting sunburnt I'm not sure what caused this. I'm also not sure how to prevent him from more sunburns if that's the case because their coop is already in the shade and they only free range in late afternoon and tend stay under trees even then.

Any suggestions on what could be happening and how to help prevent it?

Looks like possible sunburn to me. It will usually heal on its own. A good rooster will be out watching over his girls, so there's not much you can do to prevent it if you're already providing shade areas. Breeds with larger combs seem to be more prone to sunburn (as well as frostbite).

I'd just keep an eye on it to make sure it heals properly. 🙂 He's a handsome fellow!
