Roosters fought through wire!!

I was actually just wondering about this with mine. I have one in the house for now until I can figure out how to seperate them outside. The rest of them are coming in the house tomorrow for the holidays because I won't be around and I want them safe.on a second thought I put a wood board between the two sections.

What kind of wire is it?
Just regular chicken wire. I couldn't believe they could do even that much damage to each other through the wire.

Thanks all of you for your replies. I'm still kinda upset about how nasty they made each other look, they were looking so pretty and shiny this morning :barnie

Sometimes they can go far, far worse. They can have damage leading to loss of spurs, or worse yet toes and bills. Even death can happen to one or both.

Well I guess that means we're going to have to come up with a new free ranging plan. Don't wanna lose either of my boys.

I would check that bleeding has stopped. If not, cornstarch. Then Blu Kote at least on the legs to prevent infection or further pecking. Then depending on the length of fence, maybe add a second layer of fence 6" to 1' away from the first so they can't reach through it. Or keep one penned while the other free ranges, so they can't interact.

We always keep one penned up while the other is out with his hens, but the adding an extra layer of wire is a good idea. I think I'll try that next time. Thank you

Maybe hardware cloth instead of chicken wire? I'm sorry for your boys but this has been educational for me with my two and future plas.
I'm glad it helped you, and I hope it helps other people. I'm really attached to my chickens, ESPECIALLY Barney, and I don't know what I would've done if one of them had been killed. I'll look into the hardware cloth, thanks for the suggestion

I wonder if it’s the weather, the moon... or just boys being boys, but my two went at it last weekend for the first time. We were outside when they started, but I told my husband they would work it out. After a few minutes, they were still like two boxers in a ring and I noticed blood. At that point I pulled the little guy out and cleaned up the blood. I put him back on the roost after dark, and they were fine the next couple days, but luckily I was able to rehome the younger one with my aunt & her 11 ladies. It really shook me up! Vetericyn and styptic powder were really helpful.
