Roosters: The Good The Bad & The Ugly

I had a problem with my roo attacking me, but i realize now that that was to be expected... i was afraid he'd peck my leg so i'd take off real fast and then he'd chase me around the yard... bad idea... i know... now... that he's gone...

Yep, don't run or turn your back on a young guy that hasn't trained well or isn't gentle by nature... When you hatch enough and grow out enough cockerels, you will observe that they are terrible sneak / back attackers. Roosters do play dirty with each other. Hence, if a roo is unsure of his place in your flock, you could get challenged. You made a good decision to get rid of him. It is very hard to undo rooster thinking. Once the guy starts chasing you, it will be hard to stop him...

Thank you all for a great thread. I have a 21 week old white rock who was Liz, but is now Lyle. So far, so good. He'll eat from my hand, let me touch him a tad, but doesn't care at all for being held. When I do, there is usually a short struggle, but he eventually calms down. He even seems to be pretty good with my five hens (not really any violence when he mounts them, and he seems to be a little scared of my head hen). I sure hope to keep him, because he's such a good looking chicken.

One of my roos got a string wrapped tightly around his foot. I figured it would be tough to get off without cutting him, but when I started tugging at the string, he just went limp and closed his eyes, I think he even fell asleep. They can be so comical.
