Hello again.
When I get my chickens, I will not be getting Roosters, at least not yet.
I want eighteen Rhode Island Red Hens, and I want one Rhode Island Red Rooster, but I also want one that is from another breed, one that once crossed with a Rhode Island Red Hen will make a better bird.
I'm looking for Quality here, not Quantity.
Any ideas?

Barred Plymouth Rocks are crossed with RIRs that go into a lot of production breeds, although it is the RIR rooster and the BPR hens combo rather then the other way. It should work with a RIR hen and a BPR, the chicks just won't be sex links.

What's your definition of a "better bird"? A better layer? Better meat production? Prettier/more colorful?

This would help us know where to guide you.
