I've rehomed two pekins from a friend who could no longer keep them, they're around 3 years old, so don't lay regularly (one was broody when we collected them so we've decided to let her sit on a clutch we were hatching so havent seen her behaviour) but the other doesnt use her perch or roost at night in the coop and just sits in the nest box. I know shes not broody as shes out all day. Im new to chicken keeping, my egg clutch were to be my first chickens so im unsure if this is usual? I thought they liked to perch rather than sit in a nest box all night? She hasnt laid an egg since we got her (just under a week) but wasnt expecting her too...if the two pekins dont use the perch or roost will it be likely the nww chicks wont bother as they havent seen it ro learn it?

Sorry if these are silly questions!

She might not have had a perch before and is used to nesting on the ground, or maybe the other hens haven't accepted her and let her roost with them. If you have just one perch try adding another near her nest box and lower to the ground...
