Roosting Bar - 2x4 or 4x2? Which side goes "up?"

Our coop has the 2" side up but the new one will have the 4" side up. It does get cold here.

Hi from Ga. I haven't tried the 4" side yet but I will on my next pen.

I wouldn't do either. Cut you some 3 inch round saplings to use. Strip the bark and put that in there. I changed my roost to the 3 inch and the birds go in early now. Just to get their own spot. That is all but the BO's. They streach the daylight as long as they can.

After 3 years and a variety of perching orientations, this is the final outcome for us, and everyone loves it! 3 separate flocks use these at night and there is still tons of room!

still working on replacing the door and trimming the runner after the last perch.

I did 2" side up. I am in wa doesn't their "skirt" come down and keep them warm over their feet so either way they would stay warm?

I have 2x4 with the 4" side up in our old coop for my three month old birds and they never perch on it. They found at the door of the coop the board with the 2" side up and they all perch on that and it's not even the roosts ha!
