I usually see about 12 inches per, so about 6 ft for 6 hens.

Yes, 10-12 inches for each bird. They generally won't take up half that space once they actually get settled on the roost, but they do typically use their wings to get up there and down, and they need turn-around room and preening space. Plus if anyone is getting picked on, she has a little room to move out of the way...
