Roosts for chicks

Is it necessary for my 3 and 4 week old chicks to have a roost? They are in a tupperware type plastic box at the moment.

I like putting something like a tree branch in the brooder, they love it! Mine wanted to roost at about 1 1/2 weeks, chickens love to roost and they naturaly like to sleep off the ground.

yep, they love to sit on a roost. like The Goddess said they start about 1 1/2 weeks old testing their balance.

mine are 3 almost 4 weeks and love the roost. They will push each other off to have a turn.

Mine just truned 2 weeks old and have been roosting for almost a week. We just got a portable parrot roost. When they get older, I will be using a stick or something like that.

You can start small and low to the ground. It keeps them "busy" and out of trouble. I also use a rock for "King of the Mountain"

My 3 week olds really love their little branch, i'd put something taller in there but I haven't really found anything that won't crowd them too much.
The reason I think they'd like something taller is that they get on the feeder and the water, and when they are out they always want to get up on my shoulder...the higher the better for them these days!

My chick likes to ride on it's mother's back. It's 2 weeks old tomorrow and just flies up onto her back and rides around. Mama doesn't mind either.

The roos that I have in with my 3 week olds is just a 3" diameter log that I found in out woodpile. I am considering putting a thinner stick across the bars for a higher roost. I have mine in a wire dog cage with bags taped on the sides to keep the heat in. Terri O
