Please, What Breed lays the darkest brown eggs?
I have incubating 6 Pure French Black & Copper Marans I got off of ebay. Are there any with darker eggs. Come on folks, isn't there any more food value in eggs as dark as these? I know my dark brown orpington eggs taste better than the easter eggers. Thank you for any input. For any information.

The darkest Marans eggs that I've ever seen came from a Wheaten Marans hen that I had years back. I don't believe any particular breed of Marans lays the darkest eggs.....It just depends on the breeding lines, and also if it's the beginning of their cycle. The farther they are in their cycle, the lighter the eggs will be.

Some people will swear that the darker eggs taste better. But I think the nutrition is all the same.

Welcome to BYC!

I don't know if this will help you, but here is a couple of charts of the breeds that lists the color of the eggs...

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Welcome to our flock!

Thank you for the chart link. I had not been to that site before. The charts are easily read. Thank you again.

Hello :frow And Welcome To BYC! Color is hereditary and breeders really have to select for it, it seems to be one thing that is lost very easily, the Marans clubs actually have Egg shows .... Egg color chart from the UK Marans Club and some info on what affects color http://www.themaransclub.co.uk/#/eggs-and-egg-colour-chart/4541995077 This is an egg color article from the US Marans Club website, it talks about dark brown egg shell color, breeds, and the zillion things that affect it http://www.maranschickenclubusa.com/files/eggreview.pdf Just for the fun of it, the Marans club actually has egg shows where they judge the color http://www.maranschickenclubusa.com/index.html

Thank you to all whom replied. I have 6 French Marans in an incubator. And 12 more on the way. I ordered from different breeders deliberately.

Also, Chocolate Orpington Batam pullets and some ordered, again different supplier. I understand the pullet color does not dictate the eggs color.

Again, thank you
