Does anyone know how roses will do in a chicken yard?

Our hens free range, we have a corner of the orchard people are hopping the fence to steal fruit-maybe eggs too....I am thinking a big antique thorny rose bush is in order.

Anyone with Roses by their flock?

Hi Carols Clucks. I free range my chicks (ages 1-4 months) around a few large climbing roses in our yard, and I've never had an issue. Actually, my birds love to go under them and scratch around for bugs. Every now and then, someone gets poked by a thorn, but they learn not to back into them

I think you'd do okay with some rose bushes in your yard.

I'll 2nd what Red said. Mine scratch all around them looking for bugs and worms. They lay down and take breaks underneath them. If it provides shade, they don't care what it is.

Mine didn't bother the roses the first year. Then the 2nd year they just about killed them. They are vunerable after you prune them and the red leaves start coming out. They don't bother the leaves too much when they turn green, but they very much like the red leaves.
