I had a westie growing up, she lived to be 16. I'd love to get another one someday!

I tore up a piece of log this summer for the birds. Using an axe I pryed it apart. Had to wait for a clear shot before driving the axe in to pry off another hunk. Had a couple close calls, but everyone managed to keep their heads.

Woodworms(timber worms) are a favorite.

We brought 2 dead logs into the chicken run one mid-winter because we were trying to integrate 4 new chickens to our existing flock. It did the job by keeping everyone busy & occupied yet nearby one another. I don't see a downside to it - they love finding the bugs.

Best,
Empathy

I used to worry about the chickens eating things that were bad for them, until I happened on a very dead and partially decayed bird, complete with maggots, and the girls were feasting on the magggots! So I made a deal with them: you guys eat the maggots, I'll eat your eggs.

A rotten log with insects is probably better for them than any commercial chicken feed.

Greeeeeaaaat idea for me! Am bringing four new hens home and they will be in quarantine. Two hens and two pullets I guess because they are at POL and have not yet. They are from the same breeder but have not been in the same run. So I have been thinking of things to keep them busy in the chicken tractor....will be getting a couple of logs out from last years stack of firewood....from the bottom!!!

Have bought greens for them. Will be bringing them home tomorrow evening at just about time to roost. So basically they will wake up with each other. Trying to make the transition as easy as possible on all of us. Also thinking of things to put in the tractor that will be removed later but that will give them a place to get away from each other......Thought maybe a couple of totes with a good sized hole cut out of each end.

Does the kind of wood matter....lol....hickory be okay?

I wouldn't use cedar. Any log will give them great entertainment Just lay it on the groung and they will play all over it. Move it once in awhile and they go crazy over bugs and worms that have collected under it. Empty ur waterer on it and it will attract even more bugs.

Just have oak and hickory in the fireplace logs...but they have been there since last year.
Thinking of all things to keep them entertained for a few days and maybe they will forget they are not flock mates!! Then in a month I have to go through it all again with the rooster!!

Now that is funny. I just looked at your website and what beautiful Cochins you have. If I take a vacation out that way next summer I am going to contact you first and see if you have a couple for sale! I love my one Cochin!
