Bird Mama 6
In the Brooder
Hi, I'm new to this membership and finding the information very helpful. Years ago I lived on an acreage and the barn had cracks in the foundation. A mink or weasel killed everything in the barn. I didn't know about their dark side when we moved to the country. Now I live on the edge of a small town, took my granddaughter to the farm store before easter and bought 3 Americana chicks and 3 assorted colored ducklings (turned out to be a Rouen drake, a Cayuga & a Khaki Campbell). Her father has allergies and their HMO doesn't allow poultry. She has learned a lot stating ducks are so messy. But, with what happened on the acreage, I'm obsessed with creating a safe environment for them because I live on the banks of the Missouri River with all kinds of predators. And, I've gotten very attached to the flock. The Cayuga hatched 2 eggs 5 days ago, in the fall. :-( My interest is in predator prevention, over-wintering, methods to keep their coops clean and dry during inclement weather. I'm in planting zone 5a (really is a 4) and we get a lot of migrating and bugging-in ducks and geese over winter. Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences.
