Hi, I'm new to this membership and finding the information very helpful. Years ago I lived on an acreage and the barn had cracks in the foundation. A mink or weasel killed everything in the barn. I didn't know about their dark side when we moved to the country. Now I live on the edge of a small town, took my granddaughter to the farm store before easter and bought 3 Americana chicks and 3 assorted colored ducklings (turned out to be a Rouen drake, a Cayuga & a Khaki Campbell). Her father has allergies and their HMO doesn't allow poultry. She has learned a lot stating ducks are so messy. But, with what happened on the acreage, I'm obsessed with creating a safe environment for them because I live on the banks of the Missouri River with all kinds of predators. And, I've gotten very attached to the flock. The Cayuga hatched 2 eggs 5 days ago, in the fall. :-( My interest is in predator prevention, over-wintering, methods to keep their coops clean and dry during inclement weather. I'm in planting zone 5a (really is a 4) and we get a lot of migrating and bugging-in ducks and geese over winter. Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

Secure every opening into the coop/run with 1/2" hardware cloth and install a 2' wide predator apron around the coop/run setups.

I would also strongly advise on building very large runs with solid roofs so you can keep your flocks contained as living so close to water with wild waterfowl flying over your property you will be at a greater risk of your flock contracting HPAI. A large poultry farm in Rochester NY lost well over 100 birds to the disease and the rest of their flocks were destroyed by the state per law to "contain" the spread. Their land cannot house poultry for some time until it has been cleared by the State via a negative analysis.
