ROUND WORMS confirmed in diarrhea going to use safeguard does DE work?

Found and had regular vet confirm GIANT round worm in diarrhea of one of the hens. No idea who. A couple have a slight cough. The rest are fine. Diarrhea here and there and finally saw the worm. Done lots of research and they are not laying yet so think I will use fenbendazole as a wormer, but, they will start laying soon and I want an organic or safer constant wormer....I can't stand the thought of it and have kids and dogs and do NOT want worms. There is SO much info out there that it is confusing. Does DE really work? How do you know that it is working? Have you tested the poop? Does vinegar in the water work? Pumpkin seeds? how do you know? who has proven ways of a more holistic approach to keeping the chickens wormed and safe as the kids play with them and we track poo out of the run and the dogs could possibly get into it. Most people must have these same issues so I am just trying to find a tried and true method of keeping the worms AWAY, safely for them, for us and for the eggs. Thanks so much!

DE is sometimes useful as a preventative IMO, but if you have worms I would use the chemical wormer

I ordered Wazine and picked it up today so tomorrow it will be going in the water. I don't know what kind of worms mine have but I saw something weird so they are getting the Wazine

will you post how you use it once you do? Like I know in the dogs, I have to give them that yellow medicine once today, once again in 10 days and again in 10 days to continue to kill the cycles because it is the adults that you have to get at and it takes 30 days for that cycle to happen. So, I am wondering...do you do the wyzine for a day or two or what? I called the pyreline people (which is wyzine) and they said that they are not approved for layers, BUT, the FDA has told them to tell people who insist on using the wyzine or pyreline (don't know if I am saying that correctly) that they need to wait 17 days after treatment before consuming or selling the eggs....

My daughter found a roundworm INSIDE of an egg while I was out of town. I thought she must be mistaken, but after much research, and finding another roundworm in poop, I found that it can happen. Oh, the horror! I tried everything, Ceyenne pepper, Raw Apple Cider Vinegar, DE, had their poop tested and came back that they had a HEAVY infestation. I used Wazine, threw eggs away for 2 weeks, then used Ivomec Eprinex and threw eggs away for two more weeks. I hated to use the chemicals but really had no choice. I really got tired of lab fees, boxing up the poop, post office, etc. and have not had them re-checked. I did try the raw pumpkin, shredded carrots, dandelion greens, and garlic (all organic) for a week and a half. I still have a couple of chickens that just look very unthrifty with loose stools. I am quite discouraged.
I did learn through my research that mammals can't get worms from birds. So, even though the thought of worms is gross, your kids and dogs won't catch them.

Wazine is fine for roundworms and is fairly cheap. Follow directions on label.
For all other worms I rotate between Safeguard and if they also have lice etc, Ivomec.
All wormers are designed to treat only certain worms- not all. Rotating between wormers helps keep resistance down and helps treat all worm types.

I think that when you have an active infestation of worms like you do, you need to get rid of them quickly with a chemical dewormer. Otherwise, your hens' health will rapidly decline and worms can kill them quickly.

After the worms are gone, for ongoing prevention, it's nice to use a good bunch of pulverized raw pumpkin seeds (grind them in the food processor) mixed into some buttermilk. I do that, as well as adding cayenne pepper regularly to their treat, and the girls LOVE it. Also, sprinkle DE into the litter to keep it dry. And garlic is good too: soak 5 cloves of crushed garlic in 1/2 c. cold water overnight - drain the water and add 1/2 c. of garlic-infused water to 4 gals water) Make sure they drink THAT water and not other water. You can add the garlic water to the ACV water, btw.

Wazine 17 or Piperazine 17 gets rid of adult round worms..(Wazine is piperazine)
1 ounce of Wazine per gallon of drinking water.
remove all other sources of water. Give for 1 full day.
Retreat in 10 days..for heavy infestation..retreat 3rd time in 10 days..
or for third retreatment go with a broader wormer such as safegaurd, ivermectin/eprinex/ etc..

then give all chickens a probiotic..either a commercial mix, such as from McMurrays Hatchery (Immuno Charge)..or First State probiotic mix..
or plain active culture yogurt or buttermilk mixed with oatmeal and chopped egg yolk for extra protein which they need after a worm load.

continue to give extra protein..and vitamins wouldn't hurt (available at both sources)
McMurrays has a good product called Avia Charge and First State has several choices of vitamins and supplements.
you can feed back the eggs back to the chickens during the withdrawal times.
