I was looking at getting some royal palm turkeys, and was wondering if I need to heat them in the winter. I live in Wisconsin. -20 is about the coldest it gets here in the winter.

Ok. They would go in a 16'x24' pen that has a full tree in it. 15-18 feet high all covered in netting
They should be fine there. Just make sure they have a place they can get out of the prevailing wind and somewhere they can get shade.

My turkeys roost outside all winter in temperatures that can get down to -30°F. They have a shaded area where they will go when the sun is shining brightly even though the temperature may be -20°F.

Good luck.

Thankyou!
Do you know any good ways to sex baby turkeys?
It depends on the age of the poults. I do a really good job on mine by the time they are 2 months old. There is no one specific thing that I rely on but a combination of traits and behavior.

@Celie made post #2751 on August 14, 2013 that can be helpful but you cannot pick out just one item and expect accurate results. Be sure to also read her post #2759 for additional information.

Good luck.
