Rubbermaid Brooder?

This may be slightly off topic but I have recently discovered auctions in our area. Since we just moved to rural SE Indiana in November and needed lots of "stuff" for our house we decided to go to a few auctions to see what it is all about.

At one auction back in November there was a pallet of chicken keeping items. A big box with 3 brooder lights and red bulbs, small and large feeders and waterers, several bales of pine shavings, bags of grit, and tons of other small chicken related items in there. It sold for $6. Wow!

Since that time I have been to several more auctions (maybe I'm turning into an auction bum) and several have had chicken-keeping related items that sell for almost nothing. Also lots of large Rubbermaid tubs that sell for around 50 cents each when you bid on 4 or 5 at a time.

I'm not ready for any new chicks yet but when I am I'll be back at the local auctions.

Old "pack and go" mobile playpens make awesome brooders as well. I can screen off for two sides (screen down the middle) if I need more space or someone is being picked on. Lots of ventilation, good light for them, and the material is fire resistant. I love using it. Got mine for free but my friend got hers on Craigslist for 10 bucks. Done brooding? Clean it, fold it, stow it...

We use a large rubbermaid bin as a brooder, too. The difference is, we took the wire top of an old rabbit/guinea pig cage and zip tied it to the top of the bin. This way, I have an extra 18 inches of height to adjust the heat lamp!

I'll post pics tonight so you can see.
