when I collected eggs yesterday I noticed a yolk in the pine shavings and after a closer look I found what can only be described as a rubbery broken egg shell - was like an empty water balloon? We did have other eggs with hard shells so thinking it's not necessarily diet related - any advice??

Probably just a hiccup... most common in new layer or those returning to lay.

Keep an eye open for more... but one is not cause for alarm... IF you KNOW your nutrition is good.

Each bird being individual... they do have different immune, reproductive, and other things than each other... Some birds may suffer sooner than others with diet related issues... So if you are feeding a bunch of extra's, it may be worth reviewing..

Thanks for the info - we get our feed from a local farmer who makes it fresh for sale but we have been giving them some scratch and mealworms on a pretty consistent basis!!!

My ameraucana is laying soft shelled eggs lately. she used to lay big blue eggs usually. And I have no idea why? Is the feed bad? Is she stressed? I give eggshell, and oyster shell, free choice as well.. Purina, Don't let me down!
