I agree the New Members Introduction thread is the best way. You don't have to be very chatty just, give a sincere "welcome to........" If they post photos, you can comment on that. Do they really require 250 posts? I think that's more than a bit excessive.

You should join the "what is this chicken thinking?" thread! People post picks and you can add captions to them...you can also post your own pictures for people to comment on as well
