run construction

99.9% of the folks here will recommend HWC. I much prefer 1/2x1 inch cage wire because it is a smaller (thicker) gauge, find it much easier to work with, and generally less expensive than HWC.

We poured a 12 x 20 concrete pad and set bolts 4' on center to attach 4 x 4 pressure treated studs around the base and then set the vertical 4 x 4's. Wrapped the entire run in 1/2" hardware cloth, including the roof before putting the metal roofing on. Bought the HC in 4 x 100' rolls which was the most economical way to go. Used a dremmel to cut the HC to the length needed. Very happy with the outcome.

How tall will your run be?
A shorter run would use less fencing (and less hardware/wood as well).
Or an AFrame would still give you height to walk in, but use less fencing.

It's going to be 8' tall. I had thought about making it smaller but we are tall so even if i took a little out I couldnt go down much

(this pic is before construction was 100% complete, but you can get the idea)
My AFrame sides are 8 ft 2x4s. I am nearly 6ft tall and can comfortably stand in the middle. I do need to bend over to reach in the corners, but if I have any business in the corners I'm bent over anyway (catching a bird, attending to food/water, raking/shoveling, etc.)

Here's a new twist. I'm been crunching numbers and no matter how I slice it, buying 1/2 by 1/2 HWC GALV is only 20.00 more expensive than other ways.

I compared
doing walls, roofing, and apron in 1/2x1/2
to
doing lower walls in 1/2 and upper and roof and apron in 2x3 fence wire and this ended up more expensive..only because with my dimensions, i would need two rolls of the HWC or one at a small size-which is never a good deal anyway
to
doing just the roofing and apron in the 2x3 wire
to
shrinking the bottom piece from 4' to 3' and even 2'.

Couldnt find a combo that would work.

the run is 8x16x8' tall plus the apron plus the coop. I have a raised coop so the HWC would go under the 2' raised coop on the 3 sides. They connect

We recently built an 8 x 16 run. We used pressure-treated wood for everything but the rafters and purlins (directly under roof). We made one side of the run 4' tall and the other 8' tall, and ran 4' hardware cloth horizontally.
