Garron waited and waited outside of Pinepack's borders for Piper to come. Why isn't she coming?

Piper followed Scar as he stalked a herd of elk which had bedded down close to the border. She was glad it was so dark, it hid the unshed tears glistening in her eyes.
She knew that right now, somewhere close by, Garron was waiting for her...and she wouldn't be coming.
Scar stopped ahead of her and she nearly ran into him. He motioned to the heard, making it clear that he wanted her to choose their target.
Piper bit her lip and flicked her tail at a medium sized on laying close to them.
Scar nodded and tensed for the spring, his scarred hide gleaming slightly in the dark.
