SQUEEEEE!!!
They are here! All arrived safely!!! And ALIVE!
They look healthy, all have drank lots of water and eaten food and are running around like crazy in the brooder.
I can ID them!
The black, the blue, the emery penciled should be the darker spotted one, penciled should be lighter one and looks like it might be a fawn penciled and then 2 mallards.
On the mallards coloring.... 1 is darker than the other. Would that, could that mean I have a hen and a drake???? Hoping!!!
Will try to post a pic. I took them with my phone so....
OMG, they are SO FREAKING CUTE and BUSY!! And look like tiny runners already when they are zooming around!
Ya, I don't see us getting rid of any..... original plan was to keep 3 and sell 3 because we had to order 6 to get free shipping and it was $7 less than if we ordered only 3 birds.....
HAHA.... I think we are owners of 6 runners now!
THEY ARE SO CUTE!!!!! Adorable beyond words! So, so, so adorable!!!!
Not yet!THEY ARE SO CUTE!!!!! Adorable beyond words! So, so, so adorable!!!!
Do they have names?
They are still kind of young, but you can see if they'll get along. You could try to get her a new mate if that doesn't work.Hi everyone, i posted this on the duck thread too, but thought that runner experts would have some insight into my situation.
We just lost our adult male runner to a racoon yesterday afternoon.I just have the one adult female, and she's upset and lonely having just lost her mate. I can hear her crying for him and it's heartbreaking. I have a dozen 3 week old runner ducklings (they're off heat during the day and outside during the day, but i've been giving them a lamp when i lock them up at night. I was thinking about introducing her to them, for the companionship. Is that a good idea, or should i try to find a new mate for her?
It's good to think ahead!New to Runners, if you saw my posts.
Questions!
1) Do your runners reside with your chickens?
2) What kind of water source do you have for them, pond? Pool?
Reason I ask.
Our chickens, Muscovies, Turkey and Rabbit share our main run and coop. It is pretty much at capacity, esp. since we have 3 teen chicks waiting to go in. We do have a few hens that may find new homes, not sure at this time. And even then, it is at capacity.
And because the Muscovies don't really swim or need that source, we just have their buckets of water in there.
There are 6 runner ducklings in the brooder.
We have a pond for them. It is out in the main free-range yard
.
We usually only let them(chickens, Muscovies, etc.) out to free-range Fri-Sun so that the grass still grows and they don't kill the yard.
We have a small separate run we used for meat chickens this year.
It has shelter, run area, etc. but not big enough to move pond in it.
I am thinking the Runners get this run and then free-range daily so they have access to the pond that is in the main area.
Hubby thinks that #1, they alone would decimate the yard using it 7 days a week and #2, it isn't fair to the rest of the flock that only get to free-range Fri-Sun.
Of course this is the same hubby that wanted our brief period of goats.... for them to free-range daily and was SHOCKED when they destroyed our yard to inc. all plants, the fence, etc. If they had just been left in their nice, secure pen.... but that is another story!LOL
Our only other choice is to look for more fence panels and build them a larger pen that can include the pond.... more $$ and more work we were not planning on this year.
So, now that you have read my novella.... input?? What would you do?
I don't want to wait until they are ready to go outside. I want a plan in place ASAP so we can start working on it and be ready when they are ready.
THANKS!
