*~*Runner Duck Club*~*

cluckcluckluke,

Hi!

Ducks can pick up parasites, but when they have swim water and decent bedding, it does not seem to happen frequently.

Ducks can pick up viruses that are quickly fatal. These can be carried from other livestock or wild animals.

In general, ducks are less prone to disease than chickens from anything I have read or heard.

Bringing new ducks into a poultry yard, a time of quarantine is advisable. A rescuer I know has a quarantine area and always sends a fecal sample to a vet lab for testing. If anything shows up, the ducks are treated, and released with the rest when any problems are cleared up.

Drakes and chickens are the most risky because I am told a drake can kill a chicken mating with her.

Hi everyone,

I have a flock of 9 Indian Runners. One fawn and white drake and 8 ducks (2x fawn & white, 3x blue, 2x chocolate, 1x black and white splash). I'm trying to hatch a few eggs of their eggs under a broody chicken, and my question is, is there a way to tell which color mothers the ducklings came from? I imagine that any that come out fawn & white will be obvious, but what about the eggs that came from the other color ducks with the fawn and white father? Is there some kind of genetic chart I could use to get a rough idea who the moms are? Thanks!

The answer is yes and no. The Fawn & White will produce more fawn and white. The black and chocolate will look the same. Half of the blue will be like the black and blue, and the other half will be splash (silver) based. Not sure what color the balck and white/splash will be if she is indeed a splash all will be splash of something. If not splash they would be blue based like many from the black, blue, and chocolate.

. Thanks Amiga.
So I still have to quarantine new ducks even if there are no existing ducks in the first place?
I would probably just hatch my own ducks though.

I will watch the ducks and chickens as they free range and also have alternating free range time, so the drake and hen problem shouldn't be an issue.

Hay all:D .

I am just doing some research and have a few questions.

I have had 2 ducks before ( In with my chickens ) and they where great, no disease, lice etc. I only had them for a short though.

1) I am just wondering, what common diseases do ducks bring?
2) Do they get lice, mites and worms?
3) What is the worst disease a duck can get and how bad is it?
4) Would having mostly ducks, but a few chickens with them be ok? The chickens would be housed separately but will free range with the ducks.
5) Finally, for those who have ducks and chickens or have had both. Which animal is more disease, and especially mite and lice resistant.

Any help is much appreciated:D .

( Sorry for your recent loss Vickers. )

Ducks tend not to get lice because they are constantly in water.
You do need to worm them especially since the earthworm carries the gizzard worm.
Apparently they can carry salmonella. When I first got my ducks I got quite sick, but don't get sick from them anymore.

Can anyone tell me what the black duck is? She was supposedly a runner but when she finished growing she was smaller, carried herself more horizontally and she is all black except for green iridescence at the shoulders. I'll try to get a better photo if I ever see the sun again. I got her with the white runner drake when they were about 4 months old and they seem to have bonded.
thanks, Love a Duck in Oregon

I have this drake and can't figure out the color. I'm thinking he is maybe lilac splash?. He is about 9 months old, so I am also curious if his color will change. This is my first year with Indian Runners, any help appreciated.
