They are lovely!
you can gender by picking them up and listening for a quack or a squeak. Girls quack, boys don;t. You should be able to tell at this age easily enough. Just hold them around the middle to hold the wings down and let the head drop down below body level when holding them and they will tell you. I zip tag my girls leg with a pink band.
They are lovely!
Do they help in the vineyard behind them?

I figured as much with seeing the gate behind them. Nice set up. Our ducks eat all our grapes they can get to. I did not think they would but they seem to like them. They don't mess with the veggies in the garden though, unless they are eating tommy toe tomatoes.
So glad I found this thread. I lost my favorite runner today and all of the posts and pictures have been lifting my spirits. Sir Edmund was my first successful hatch - she was named after Sir Edmund Hilary because the day after she hatched she wanted to climb everything. She was always a very sweet little duck who didn't exactly like being held but dealt with it with a profound amount of patience. She had a way of looking at me eye to eye with an expression of really, do I have to put up with this? I already miss her terribly. I acquired my other runners after they were fully grown and they aren't at all friendly, so there's nobody in the yard to cuddle with anymore. I told my husband I needed more ducklings...I think I know where Sir Edmund picked up her long-suffering expression from. But really, all I need are about a half dozen Trouties and one or two White runners and I promise, I won't get any more ducks...and this time I mean it!![]()
Requiescat in pace, Sir Edmund.
