Runner with a prolapsed penis

Storey's Guide says:
- Isolate the bird (I know that's hard in your case)
- wash and disinfect the penis
- apply a medicated ointment daily
- recovery may take several weeks or longer
- don't let drakes mate again (ie keep them away from ducks) for 3 months

Another good book I have agrees with the waiting. Also giving them swimming water in their pen.

So - I'd treat and wait.

My Welsh Harlequin THINKS he's having his way with the girls, btw. He just doesn't connect with what he's got left and no babies. Some of them ARE fertile, if they don't lose too much.

Just prepare for the treatment to be HARD. Blackie isn't going to enjoy most aspects of the treatment. Especially the disinfection. (

) Therefore, treatment won't be easy.

We did treat and wait on Freckles. He didn't mind being treated, he didn't much mind the procedure either. It was a lot harder on me than on him. We spent weeks working with him daily, until his dangley got damaged, then it had to come off. With 20/20 hindsight, I would NOT have worked with him for weeks, we had to take a lot more of it because of the damage and it was harder on him than it would have been to trim it earlier. He was a trooper. He's still a good boy.

PS We used the Storey's Guide too, wonderful book!

I was told that you dip the penis in sugar and stick it back in (wearing a glove of course). The sugar makes it stick and stay in, then you crate the duck for several days to make sure it does stay in. I have a drake that had a prolapsed penis that he healed up from before I got him. He is much more 'stimulated' than the other drakes and when he's trying to mate his thing just dangles so he never gets satisfaction. He is one frustrated drake. Has anyone else noticed this about ducks that have recovered from this?

Excuse me for asking a dumb question as I am clueless on ducks, but how and why does it prolapse in the first place??
