Runner with a prolapsed penis

I had the same problem with my black runner. We took him to the vet, first time put a stitch in his vent, gave us an antibiotic, told us to keep him separate from the flock. The stitch didn't work it fell back out, so we cut the stitch kept him in a crate by himself. I think in about a weeks time the end began to turn black, so back to the vets office for the dreaded snip! Too make a long story short

after a two month separation from the flock, all is back to normal for our runner. Good luck!

Long-story short! Hahaha! Good one Sean!

Thank you all for sharing! I don't really have a way to keep him separated right now. Guess I need to figure this out. I have been intending to build an addition onto their itty-bitty coop, so I guess I should do it. I was planning on making it in such a way as to be able to put a board between the old and new sections in case I have a problem like this! Actually, I was thinking of needing to separate my adult ducks from the ducklings that will hopefully be hatching in about 2 weeks! Trying not to count my ducklings before they hatch, but their are 12 eggs in the incubator!

So, sounds like the question is do I let it dry up and fall off on its own, or snip it now. Hmmm...maybe somewhere in the middle?

Ok, really?? I mean, I have only had ducks for less than 4 months and I have to think about snipping parts off? Aaaaacckkk!! I have a pretty strong stomach...but this may be a bit much for me! I already know that I will have to do it though, hubby couldn't! Hahaha!

Don't snip it now. Give the poor drake a chance to get it back in. Snipping it will only provide an entry point for infection.

Do any of your friends or neighbours have a dog crate you could borrow?

We have a couple of big dog crates from training of our danes, so that worked well for us. Even a big box with some bedding as a temporary place untill you can get something better. We had to keep him close to the flock or he would have a fit. I think the worst was the length of time, but the vet said that if he tried to use it too soon we could be back to square one. Keep him separate is really important because the others will think it's a worm! We could not see any injury at first but there definitely was because the end 1/2 inch turned black within a week or so. We have also been to the vet with a leg injury in a fawn and white runner. Sometimes things happen I guess. Good luck, with this and the eggs!

70, I will give it a chance! Not sure I could handle doing it right now!! I think I want to find the balance between 'snipping as a preventative' and 'wait until it falls off'. I will ask around to see if anyone has one I could borrow. It would have to be for a large dog because he is a tall runner! I will feel bad for him when he is out there by himself at night though. Poor guy. But, I guess it would be better than getting his parts mistaken for dinner!

I just spent the last two hours reading through the first 60 pages of the thread you are really active on (formerly known as today is hatch day). I wanted to get to the part where we find out who makes it, but I think I can't read any more. Gotta hit the hay. But, when you replied to mine I thought, "wait, I know that picture!"

Sean, How much was hanging out, and how much did he end up losing? This guy has pretty much the whole thing hanging out. I can't imagine him having to lose the whole thing!

If you do decide to snip, be sure to use sharp and well sterilized scissors. It really isn't as awful as it sounds, and the duck I had to do it to didn't bleed very much at all, though I am thankful the others dropped off and healed on their own without anything other than some antibiotics and a bit of Preparation H. It sounds like you may have a worse prolapse than I've ever dealt with, and the size of the duck you're dealing with probably makes it look even worse.

If you snip, I would certainly isolate him to be sure that the bleeding has stopped afterward. I'd have him used to the crate beforehand.

with most problems people always seem to ask for a photo so they can 'see' how bad it is......

wonder why nobody has asked yet on this thread?!

poor drake!

well...this dudes days of the "wild life" are numbered apparently, so I'd start studying the "procedure" and gathering the supplies...

sharp cutting tools, from a vet or feed store made to cut flesh, styptic and the right antibiotic cream or gel, whatever is advised. Have a hospital pen set up for the first couple days to monitor and give the "wound" a chance to start healing. Does it need to be stitched completely closed? or partially? Things to find out in the next week or so...

I've seen cats and dogs with big surgical wounds that ripped open that healed on their own.

Its not a big deal to the animal as I said earlier. Humans equate this to an equally opposite sensation as it is pleasurable to us. To the animal it is NOT that way at all. Animals do not "mate" for pleasure. There is none. Its strictly to reproduce based on instinct.
Farm animals are castrated on farms everyday and let loose to roam. Its still un-nerving to say the least, (especially to many men for some reason) but seeing a drake drag his "stuff" across a concrete sidewalk kinda stings too !

Help the guy out...He'll thank you later. Might be much later...but he'll be grateful.

Is he too old to go thru a name change??????

How does "Porn-Star" sound as a duck name?

Good luck with your drake and his 'problem' that seems to follow him around everywhere...
