Runner with a prolapsed penis

At the moment we have 3 drakes, 3 ducks. He was the first to mature, but was only mating one or two of the ducks. I don't really have a way to keep him separate at night without risking predators. We are in a residential neighborhood, so there are not that many predators around. But, it only takes one raccoon, right?
I can keep him in a separate pen during the day easily enough though. Will he be ok being away from his buddies?

Thank you, easttxchick, I will ask her as well!

ppl told me to keep him seperate but I didnt... I did watch carefully tho to make sure things were okay !! Just make sure hes not being picked on, I think that was the main concern. I do spend alot of time with my ducks and when Im at work my hubby can check on them ( they are at his business)

THank you Hattiegun! I might just leave him with them. I have been watching and nobody is picking on him yet. I will keep watching! They freerange my backyard, and I am usually home all day.

I just read something about this recently...if I can find the article I will forward it..I DO recall that it was not uncommon for the affected parts to be discarded, and fall off. Like a lizard looses a tail and grows another.
Not sure if the duck is going to grow another....can;t recall that part, but the article did mention that seeing a duck penis on the ground around a large flock wasn't unusual.

mercy........

Knowing all this, I can easily gather that the drakes are not getting a whole lot out of the mating process...cause if they WERE....they'd be a LOT more vocal about draggin their business across the county for weeks before it fell off !

I have used the hemorrhoid cream, and it does have some effect, but not as much as I would like to have on a prolapse. Have had four heal on their own and one have to be cut...all different lines and colors of ducks...and the "diarrhea" you mention seems to be due to the duck not being able to retract its organ. The poop kind of sprays out around it, which is why they can get a big frozen stone of feces hanging on it (ouch) if left outside where it is cold. In winter you might not actually know that this is what has happened...happened to me my first winter. I said to myself, "Why does that duck have a big glob of manure hanging off him?" Went to try to gently pull it loose, and QUACK! Not good. That guy got into the house and it took him about six weeks have it dry up and drop off. Not all of them will, however, and The Call Duck Breed Book goes into some detail about how to cut a prolapse.

if it won't stay retracted, at some point it needs to be clipped off (sorry, ouch, I know) because it will get damaged and infected, not to mention the distress of having other ducks think it's a lunch treat. and if you're not supervising 24/7, that's probably happening even if you don't see it.
best thing to do if you can't get it to stay in is to take care of that *before* it becomes a bigger problem... don't wait until you've got more injury to deal with. not to mention to save the poor guy the ongoing distress of draging it on the ground from now until it becomes an infection problem...

search on duck prolapsed penis and you should find at least half a dozen threads on here on how to do the surgery, or you can take it to your vet.
sorry little guy, if you can't get it tucked in, it'll probably have to go...
