i also put up some clear christmas lights for light it has helped my chickens and ducks. we were in cold snap a week ago and getting tons of eggs. it was -7 F and got a dozen eggs a day outta my birds.

HoglundH,

The heavier breeds need the water, I am told. My ten runners are around 3.5 to 4 pounds each, and the lighter breeds are capable without water.

How about that!?

And, lest I forget

No water for breeding required. i have 2 drakes over 6 hens. they breed like crazy. i think they breed better outta water better than in water. my ducks are swimming today but it is 33F today. first time in about a month i think.i dont remember. i dont use water heaters. i only give them 1.5 gallon bucket of water normally, and refill often. the bucket is 10 iches deep for washing head and eyes and drinking. yes my runner are small my hens are like 3.5 to 4.5 lbs. they are almost like call ducks with long beaks and necks with big feet. lol
