That's not quite correct. If their food contained no calcium and the only calcium they got was from their egg shells, then maybe. But it isn't a closed loop. They get calcium in their food plus from free ranging. Doc7, you're just trying to gross out someone. People have back fed the shells for 1000s of years without it hurting birds.feeding egg shells back as a source of calcium is the same as drinking your own filtered urine as your water source. It will continue to dwindle as it is used for bone growth and other processes, just like you lose water through breathing, it isn’t a closed loop.

Where do you think birds got extra calcium from before around 50 years ago when Big Corps started selling it in bags?

I see what you're trying to do, and it ain't working. Go back and re-read what I wrote, I think you have already answered your own question. So a laying hen being fed flock raiser and not being free ranged can simply eat her egg shells for suitable calcium supply?

Of course not, I didn't say to use shells as a sole source of calcium. As for your facetiously worded question, why would anyone expect a hen being fed flock raiser (even with egg shells) to maintain healthy calcium levels? There has to be some more calcium added somewhere. Just like theoretical "free magnet perpetual energy" machines, you can't get out more than you put in. Eventually the energy runs out, as does the calcium.OP didn’t mention feed or free ranging. My point is that there is commonly dangerous advice given on this forum regarding egg shells as a - or the - source of calcium for laying pullets or hens. This does not work without an incoming stream of calcium from other sources.
