Owlkit blinked her eyes open and mewed with pain. Her leg looked much better and she was sure she could move around on it but it burned with firey pain.

“Shh, don’t try to stand,” she murmured, using her tail to press her into the moss. “They’re outside last I checked, but I’d assume they went inside the nursery due to the rain.” She glanced outside.

“I know it’s hard,” she murmured when she was done. “But you need to rest.” Lilyflight felt her throat tighten. She knew that she had to tell her, but it didn’t make the task ahead any easier. Leaning in and wrapping Owlkit close in a gesture of comfort, she said quietly, “I’m so sorry... But it doesn’t look like you’ll be able to be a warrior...” She felt her throat tighten, strangling any further words.

Owlkit was silent for a moment but finally small salty tears dribbled down her cheek and she pressed her face into her mother's fur.

Lilyflight held her closer and began gently licking her all over. “I know,” she said quietly as a tear fell down her own face. She continued in her attempts to comfort Owlkit.

Bramblestar was sitting outside, watching the kits playing and when he heard Owlkit's voice, he ran into the den. He saw Lilyflight telling her the news and silently sat beside them and licked Owlkit comfortingly.
