*Running with the Flood* A Warrior Cat RP~Open~

Hazelpaw went near where she was, holding a couple mice. She lingered uncertainly before twitching her ear and lating down a fox-length away. She cleared her throat to get the other she-cats attention before pushing one of the mice toward her
Nightbird’s ear twitched again. That was the only sign she was still alive. After a few moments, though, she was roused by the nearby scent of fresh kill. She rolled to her paws and gave Hazelpaw a quizzical look.

Hazelpaw looked back, not really sure what to say. "I.. erm... I was thinking we could eat together." She paused, then quickly added, "If you want to. If you don't, I can go."

Nightbird stared at her for a moment. She shrugged, “Sure,” she meowed, “why didn’t you say something?”
Barely giving the apprentice time to answer, Nightbird grabbed the mouse’s head in her jaws and bit down, relishing the crunch of its bones in her mouth.

She stayed silent then bit into her own mouse, enjoying the warmth of the freshly caught prey. "So, have you heard that Lionpaw and Brackenpaw are having their assessment soon?" She asked, attempting conversation

“No,” Nightbird said. She paused a moment in her chewing. “I get in trouble for hearing things.” She observed wryly. Again, she wondered about Hazelpaw. She gave the apprentice a sideways look, then went back to eating. She kinda disliked me before, right? What’s changed?

She twitched her whiskers in amusement. She paused, debating about what to say. She took another bite of mouse, stalling. "I'm sorry. I know that I haven't been that nice to you. I was just kind of put-off after I tried to become your friend that day outside the apprentice den. I would like to get to know you better. You're the only she-cat that's close to my age. I'm surrounded by a bunch of toms now and sometimes it get annoying." She stared at her paws in an uncomfortable silence

Nightbird swallowed the last of the mouse, licking her muzzle. Her tail flicked across the ground as if it had a mind of its own. Finally, she said, “Yeah, they are a bit annoying.” She snorted. “Not as bad as I used to think, though.” She fell silent. She looked up and met Hazelpaw’s eyes for a moment before looking away. “I should, uh, apologize for generally being a, uh, jerk.” She stammered. “I’ve been... overly hostile.” Nightbird finished, awkwardly clawing at a clump of fur on her neck.

She smiled, her eyes reflecting a twinge of amusement at her awkwardness. "I appreciate the apology." She finished her mouse, then stretched and stood up. "Wanna go for a walk? My mentor says I've earned a break for the day."

“Sure,” Nightbird said, neither looking pleased nor bored at her suggestion. “It’s fine if you can’t keep up with me, apprentice.” She meowed, giving her a grin to show it was a joke.

The wind had been knocked out of Dustfur, and she inwardly clawed herself. I must impress him! But she recovered in a heartbeat and twisted herself out from under him. Spinning around she flung herself back at him, purposefully landing short just inches from his paws. She hoped that he would instinctively brace himself for the impact and when nothing hit him he would lose his balance. She knew that using her head was just as important as using strength when fighting.
