I went out to my coop yesterday and noticed at least 3 of my chickens have these symptoms after it rained for 3 days straight. They have a coop with open ventilation at the bottom. Is this one of those respiratory things or can chickens develop allergies? I've been putting vitamins in their water to try an boost their system, but any advice would be appreciated!

Ventilation should be at the top not the bottom. You may be simply trapping the ammonia and various dander at the top of the coop, plus allowing air to circulate from the feces which can mold.

Rain often produces mold, so they may be exhibiting symptoms of that.

I'd clean the coop and create ventilation at the top of the coop. Be sure there are no straight drafts on the birds though.

Thanks for the reply, I'll get all that fixed up. Is this something they can recover from, or is this one of those nasty diseases that is incurable and passes from chicken to egg?

Also, are the eggs still good to eat?

Sniffling from poor ventilation is simply cured by better ventilation.

If it is mold (Aspergillis), getting rid of the mold should do the trick.

Because of your poor ventilation, my thoughts run there as opposed to a viral or bacterial disease...which could be a possibility...but let's fix the ventilation first and see what happens.

Thank you for your expert advice. I'll get right on that!
