I have an 8 week old silkie who had a swollen crop I discovered two days ago. I have been trying to help her clear things out but I could never get it complete empty and it felt like there were gas bubbles in her crop. I could get food and junk out (and it didn’t smell bad at all so I don’t think it’s sour crop) but she’d remain swollen.

I wasn’t able to separate her from the other peeps because I was not home to do so but planned on doing it this evening. I found her and I suspect she got pecked....hard... as on her right side, upper chest, lower neck, she had a tear and food particles came out when i touched it. GAH!

I took her inside and tried to clean her up but the junk kept coming out so I went with it and emptied her crop until she was no longer swollen. I could not get everything out. I fear this open wound might do her in now, and I’m not sure what to do. For now she’s cleaned up and warm and in a quiet place rest. She’s chirping that contented chirp so she seems to at least feel okay for now.

WHat would you suggest my next steps be?

1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) Silkie - 8 most - wt unknown but she’s very small and has lost weight due to crop issue.
2) What is the behavior, exactly. Lethargic but alert. Can stand and walk around.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? ~3 days
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? No
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. Yes - tear in skin and crop rupture
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. I didn’t find anything funky in the crop contents... just food and water. I suspect she got picked on while I was away which caused the tear and rupture.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. ACV spiked water with nutridrench and medicated crumbles, bugs, fresh greens.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. No poop :(
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? I’ve been having her vomit to see if there was an obstruction or to see if there was a yeast infection but nothing came of either.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? DIY. I won’t take her to a vet.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use. buckwheat hulls and straw as bedding.

I would try to get her to a vet for crop surgery. Crop surgery is best done by a vet, but some people do it at home. Superglue or stitches are used to close the 2 layers—the crop and the skin over the crop. There are many videos by Googling “crop surgery on a chicken.” In the meantime, keeping the crop disinfected with Betadine, chlorhexidene, saline, or Vetericyn would be good.
