Russian Orloffs

Remember, spangling should increase as time passes so a lot in the beginning might not be good long term.
x2 My bird with the nicest pullet spangling has some solid white hackle feathers after her first adult molt, whereas my birds with less/minimal spangling as pullets have nice spangling after their first adult molt. I suspect by second/third adult molt the first bird will have far too much white on her.

My Orloffs ran out of the barn today and started gobbling up the snow. It was like they were hungry for snow! They have food and they have water so maybe they just wanted a slushie??

I finally have a picture of my Orloff pullet that I like. Wanted to share.

I am posting this one in my state thread as well. [Please ignore the cobwebs in the barn window.]

She should ha e been on the cover of Backyard Poultry magazine for their Russian Orloff article! I have one Valentine's chick so far and it's looking good for at least 5 more. I haven't seen any signs of a live chick in 2 of the eggs but it is early yet. 14 were set, 8 went into lockdown. Now the chick in the brooder is peeping to the chicks in their eggs in the bator in the other room! Happy Valentine's Day everyone:)

Thanks Cknldy. That's a nice comment. I wonder whose birds they did use. I haven't seen the article. I am jealous of the peeping. I do think I might start some eggs sooner rather than later. I have a few birds, namely the Orloffs, that aren't old enough yet to be laying. Soon I hope-- well I hope after I get the garden in actually.

I have started setting eggs. First batch, 8 are developing out of 21 set. Second batch, 26 are fertile out of 37 set. Too early to tell if they are developing, just that they are fertile. Looks like I'm ready to start taking orders for chicks. Anybody interested, PM me. I'll post some new photos of the flock soon.

Wishing you luck for many chicks desertmarcy! Candled the second set in the incubator today (day 8 for them). I was hoping for better development than the first set and it seems to be on target-only 2 clears out of a dozen! All the rest have wonderful veining and blastoderms. They will be quickly candled again before lockdown to check for deathrings. Six chicks hatched of 8 that went into lockdown from 14 originally set in the first round.

Those are some good looking chicks. Good luck with your second batch.
