Russian Orloffs

Some of my babies from desertmarcy 2 and 3 weeks old now. Little goldie in front is 2 weeks. next over is 3 weeks. Growing like weeds.

Very calm and friendly. Smart little guys that like to ride around on top of my feet when I go see them.



I'm really enjoying seeing all the different color variations right now as chicks and can watch and see how they develop and what colors they "carry". Those two bigger funny looking ones in the background are older Brabanter chicks not Orloff. The black and white big girl in the front is a Mottled Java. The rest are Orloff.

By this age (24 weeks, hatched Oct 16) with the others I could tell sex. These all look like pullet style with no sign of hackle or saddle feathers now! What do yall think?

Hard to see but maybe the one on the left has different wing style and could be a cockerel? Love their feather. They eat well obv.

Too hard to tell at this angle. Pinched tails are obvious but other than that only three look like they are females. I am guessing all four are because mine are younger and very clearly have hackles that are longer and fuller if they are cockerels.

Thank you everyone. The first set I got last Spring I could definitely tell the males by now. With these I am second guessing myself every day! I know this isn't said much but I really wanted a cockerel from this group

Thank you!! are you going by tails or wings or both? Just curious as to what you look for.

JWEBB I'm going by tail carriage and shape as well as the oval shape of feathers on the shoulders. MAles have a straighter tip rather than rounded tip as hens do. The one on the left is pretty noticeable in th ephoto (whithe rounded tip on shoulder feather). Also the fact that at 6months of age it they where cockerels the long hackles & sickles would be noticeable. ROs can be sexed almost accurately at 4 months by the feathers IMHO

How hard do you think it would be for me to tell the difference between the eggs from Russian Orloffs and Dominiques?

Use a vent dye and it shouldn't be tough. Or, use pens for the girls for a bit and you can 'get to know' their eggs apart.
