Russian Orloffs

Also, just an update, I noticed Shelley keeps her birds up in the winter, but so far my pullets are doing fantastic in a pretty open environment in Alaska. They didn't seem to be suffering at all in our last week of temperatures in the teens. Thank god for their fluffy butts! They just cuddled right up and carried on. My two standard Cornish, on the other hand, have had so many problems.

The hens generally have a slightly "lower" stance than the roosters...but it should by no means be too low. When alert, they should still stand very erect and have a nice slope to their backs. They shouldn't be too horizontal.

I wish I could let all of mine be "free"...but alas, I have too many roosters that would LOVE to get ahold of one another.

Plus, I keep all of my breeds separate for breeding purposes. My Orloffs do handle the bitter cold with exceptional ease...doesn't bother them at all.

Haiku, and the rest of you wonderful Alaskans...you're my heroes! You confirm my belief that chickens ARE chickens and are naturally adept to acclimate to any weather conditions. When I'm starting to feel stressed about my birds and the upcoming snow and cold...I simply read your posts and my worries are eased. Thank you.

The one that is on the Russian is a quick throw together for the picture but I do make my own ties with a little heaver cords and swivels.
