Russian Orloffs

Pics
Hi,

I just ordered my first Russian Orloff chick from a hatchery but I am not sure if I got her. There's pictures under "What Breed or Gender is This?" The topic is "What breeds? Please

" by JustDawn, which I started yesterday. I can post pictures here but I didn't want to unless I knew for a fact that I actually had a Russian Orloff chick!

Thanks for your help.

Hi! I looked at your pictures Justdawn. I had my orloffs as chicks, but I'm no expert. But the one you marked as a possible Russian Orloff does not look like mine, which are spangled.

However, the two at the bottom of your collection look more like them. Mine looked very much like rhode island red chicks at age one day except they had more color on their wings. I actually thought mine were sussex until I posted pictures here on BYC and some orloff experts told me what they were. I'm sure someone here will be able to identify all of them for you! But the one you marked as an orloff does not look like mine did.

Ship date on my chicks is Wednesday. Gotta go put together a brooder and think about where these guys are gonna live this winter! Don't think my Delawares will put up with anyone "different".

Is this what they mean by getting the cart before the horse? Except, I got the chicks before the chicken coop.

Heh, it is how I got the DH off the couch and out in the yard to build both the chicken coop AND my duck area.

Kind of the opposite of If you build it, they will come.

More like...they are here, better hurry up!

My orloffs can fly really well, so make your fence high or top covered. Or plan to clip wings like I do. Mine can fly totally out of a dog run enclosure.

Hmm, that's something to think about for sure. I really need to have both my runs covered, because there is a hawk/eagle/raven problem here. Luckily, I haven't had any issues so far with my Del pen, but I think it's because they end up spending most of their time under the covered portion.

I'm planning on the 5 Orloff chicks living with my three newly acquired Buff Brahma pullets that the Dels are totally rejecting, so far. I think Brahmas are supposed to be mellow enough that it will be easier to introduce them to the babies, eventually. It sounds like they will be similar sizes, too, with funny puffs of feathers sticking out of their extremities everywhere! I bet that will be an awesome looking group!

Delawares are just snobs, I've decided.
