Russian Orloffs

Alaskan I got my Spangled (day old chicks) from a hatcher in Ohio, the Mottled eggs from a lady out in Washington state( her last eggs since her adults got eaten by coyotes a few days later), & my Mahogany eggs I ordered from Erhard.

My Spangled settling in for the night (8 wks old tomorrow)

The spangled I found the seller through ebay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/12-Russion-Orloff-Hatching-Eggs-/230977815298), Tom Thompson. The mottled's through a member of the Russian Orloff Society Group on facebook, & the Mahogany's http://kummerpoultry.com/our-breeds/large-fowl/

There is also a list on the US Orloff Club http://usorloffs.freeforums.net/

Thank you so much! I know about the Orloff club list, but I was so curious to know if you had gotten your birds from people on that list, or from other sources.

The Spangled & Mottled eggs I did get from another source. I was going to get some Spangled from someone in NH around May or so but they never got back to me. I responded to a Craigslist ad for some they had listed but had already sold. Told me they would have some in May & never got back to me. There are a few breeders in Canada as well. I think it's a lot easier to import from there than the other side of the world. I'm looking into seeing if any are close to Montreal since it's only about a hour or so drive from here.

I did some butchering and sold a bunch of stewing hens and freed up a pen. So this afternoon I moved 21 growing Orloffs into that pen. It is on the east side of my poultry house and has a mister system, and they are predicting another bad heat wave the rest of this week, so I thought these birds would do better there than in the grow out pen they were in, with a bunch of different breeds. Plus it looked like they were getting picked on, some bare back spots, whereas none of the other breeds look like that. Odd. Anyway, I had to net them all to catch them and this is the first time in a while I've had them all in my hands up close and personal. I found 3 that had a few feathers between their toes and 1 with some leg feathering. I'll be looking for excuses to cull later on, so I guess these will be out.

Well, yesterday I had my first heat stroke issue. One of my Spangled from Ideal had a bad case of heat stroke and I couldn't bring her out of it. It has only been in the high 80's, so this was disappointing. I am hoping the rest are a bit hardier, as it rarely gets above low 90's here. I have fans in the coop, and dunk them in water when they are struggling, but any other tips for preventing heat stroke?

On a happier note- my five chicks from DesertMarcy arrived this morning! Strong, happy, healthy babies. I am so excited to see them grow.

I also have 18 eggs in the bator from NCSprout, so I am very optimistic that I will have a good group of birds to start this project with!

I have also been in touch with Erhard from Kummer Poultry, and may have some hatching eggs from him for my next batch. I am very excited about being a part of this wonderful breed!

I am glad to see so much interest in preserving Orloffs, and I thought I'd post a few photos of mine. I have a Spangled roo, breeding unknown; four Mahogany hens acquired as pullets from Erhard (with the gracious assistance of Royce Blaricome) and seven 10-week-old Spangleds (three cockerels, four pullets) hatched out for me from eggs purchased from Erhard. You will also see my buff Olive Egger from Royce on the righthand side of the photos of the adults.

As you can see, the roo is keeping company with the hens. at least two of the hens have gone broody, and I may consider letting one of them sit eggs to see how the color cross turns out. I have been unable to get a Mahogany roo so far.

Let me know what you think--I am new to judging chickens, but willing to learn.

Thanks, and have a great day!
Dianne

ashandvine not sure what RBR is if I find out any other variations out I will most def let you & NC know. The person I got my Mottleds from has creole, cuckoo, & black they're working on but as you say it's important to know how they got it. I have a young pair of white bantams but I'm more on the LF side. I also have a few Mahogany eggs coming in this week so we'll see how that goes. Would like to find some Black Breasted Mahogany as well.
Never heard of mottled. That would be black with white chips? Either that or you bought two of the same thing, being Spangled. RBR should have BBR. Black breasted red. You got it.
Ashandvine,
Thanks for the answer about egg production. I am happy with that output. By older hens, how old?
I had hens from 1 year to nearly four.

Did you mean to type hatchery or a hatcher as in breeder? Washington state is probably one of the women in here... although if coyotes got her birds that would be a real shame. Heather maybe?
